20 March 2014 · Delegated - Director of Planning and Building Control (M Kallyher)
The British Hotel, North Quay, Douglas, Isle Of Man, IM1 4lb
The proposal involves adding a non-illuminated wall-hung clock and linear LED luminaires (uplighting and downlighting) above and below most windows on the prominent front facade of the British Hotel, an end-of-terrace public house. The clock replaces a previous sign removed for health and safety reasons.

Environment Policy 35
Within Conservation Areas, the Department will permit only development which would preserve or enhance the character or appearance of the Area, and will ensure that the special features contributing to the character and quality are protected against inappropriate development. The officer tested the clock and lighting against this, finding the clock preserved/enhanced the building due to appropriate design/scale; lighting enhanced the public house via suitable positioning, luminance (6cd/m² <10cd/m² limit), colours and protection, with no conflict.
