Continent 8 Technologies had an existing Data Hall (Data Hall A), which is cooled via in-room computer room air conditioning units (CRAC units), which are in turn cooled via external condenser units, linked with DX pipework systems.
They have now fitted out one of the shell Data Halls (Data Hall B) with cooling systems, to enable is originally proposed use.
The equipment installed to cool this Data Hall uses up-to-date technology, to reduce both the energy cost and the environmental impact.
The external steel support structure is designed and built to also accommodate two future AHUs that will allow cooling to a further Data Hall, and to reduce the expected use of the DX systems as there will be further resilience within the ventilation cooling system when all three AHUs are installed.
The installed air handling unit (AHU) is to accommodate the cooling requirements of Data Room B, and, in the future, to run in conjunction with the additional AHUs to provide cooling and further resilience to both Data Hall B and a proposed Data Hall C.
The insulated AHUs are air-to-air cooling units that utilise free cooling, that can be assisted through the use of an adiabatic array.
The fans arrays in both the fresh air and data hall paths are super premium efficiency EC IE4 fans, and have been selected to run at part load with in-built redundancy and over-run features. When the additional AHUs have been installed, the systems should benefit from further operational savings.
The thermal wheel heat exchanger provides indirect free cooling when available, reduces the humidity swings within the data hall, and provides isolation between the fresh air and the data hall air.
The installed AHU Intakes air from the opening at the front of the unit facing the building. This air then passes ever an adiabatic array, through the external side of the thermal wheel heat exchanger, and is exhausted at the rear of the unit to atmosphere. The adiabatic array is automatically drained and left dry when its cooling duty is not required (when external temperature is below $17^{\circ} \mathrm{C}$ ). The water not utilised for the adiabatic cooling effect is recirculated to reduce the overall amount of water required.
The data hall air is extracted from the data hall, and is transported through insulated duct and insulated plenums to the AHU. This return air is cooled by the thermal wheel heat exchanger, and supplied back into the data hall using an EC fan array.
In-room CRAC units have also been installed so that the current, single AHU has back-up cooling available in the event of failure.
The 2 dual-circuit CRAC units are connected to external condensers via systems of DX (R410A) pipework. Emitters
Ductwork connected to the new Data Room B air handling unit is installed using an aluminium preinsulated ducting system.
To upgrade the site from a single grid power feed to duel grid power feeds, to increase the resilience of the power supply, and to give diverse power supply routes.
The $11 \mathrm{kV} / 400 \mathrm{~V}$ transformer is a synthetic oil filled unit, set above a bund capable of containing $110 \%$ of the oil volume. It is enclosed within a fence for additional security.
The above plant items are all designed to use clean technology, and as such there are no polluting emissions from them.
